Will an SATA hard drive work in an a computer that used SATA?
My laptop broke and it has a WD 160GB SATA Scorpio Blue HDD. I’ve found a new laptop that uses an SATA hard drive. Does this mean I can simply buy the new laptop, put my old HDD in, and be good with all my stuff?
Yes and No.
The OS will not run because It is going to look for your old computers hardware and components and see your new computers configuration. It is very unlikely that it will properly boot. If you can find the exact same laptop (make, model, build year,.. exect specs) there is a chance it will work but I wouldn’t bet on it.
Your data however is still safe and sound on the hard drives files system. If you have a new OS installed on the laptop you can connect the old hard drive (via external HD enclosure or internal connections if available) and retrieve your old data off of it. There maybe a few permissions issues depending on the OSs being used but it is still there.
