How do I configure routers?
I have Qwest DSL GT-701WG modem/router with two laptops connected via wireless. One side of the modem router goes to the internet (WAN). I have SOHO router connected via cable to Ethernet port on modem/router. I have three desktops connected via cable (LAN) to SOHO router. All five computers can connect to internet just fine. Software is XP and Windows 98se. Laptops can see each other and share resources; desktops can see each other and share resources. Desktops can ping laptops. Laptops cannot ping desktops. DHCP is enabled in both routers. How do I configure routers so that laptops can see desktops and vice versa (with existing equipment)? Currently the laptops are on a different sub net than the desktops.
It is very odd to have 2 routers in a situation like you have. In fact it unnecessarily complicates things.
The DSL modem / router / switch / wireless integrated unit (which I will call Modem / Router herein). is all you need. Connect all wired pcs to the Modem / Router. If you need more connecting ports, add a network switch, connect one port of network switch to modem / router switch and all other wired pcs to either unused modem / router switch ports or the new network switch ports. This puts all devices on the same subnet.
The problem with your configuration is that the SOHO router’s LAN subnet must differ from the subnet of the modem / router. This causes the problems you described.
You may be able to overcome the problems you are seeing without a hardware change by creating a static routing table but it is a whole lot easier to just use the network switch.
